Celebrating Sir David Attenborough

The "Bat Man of Mexico,"Professor Rodrigo Medellin, led birthday tributes to Sir David Attenborough who turned 100 on 8 May. WFN patron HRH The Princess Royal joined world experts in species including snow leopards, penguins and sharks in honouring the giant of storytelling about the natural world for his global impact on conservation. Sir David's legendary documentaries inspired conservationists around the world to take action for the planet and his deep commitment to nature over seven decades has motivated them to stay the course. Whitley Award winning conservationists have shaped more than 200 national and international policies and their work has led to the formal protection of 29 million hectares, according to Edward Whitley founder of the Whitley Fund for Nature. Since 1998, Sir David has held roles including trustee, ambassador and narrator of the winner films. A woolly false vampire bat was named "David," in Mexico's Mayan forest in honour of the UK national treasure who is consistently voted the UK's most popular person.
